Summer Allergies

Well it rained again and my allergies are going crazy. I see it every year: families struggling with sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion right in their own homes. The good news? You can dramatically lower indoor allergens with some targeted steps—and professional carpet cleaning is one of the most powerful weapons you have.
Here are five simple steps to lessen allergies in your home.
1. Keep Pollen Out:
Close Windows and Run the AC. During high-pollen days (check your local Dallas pollen count), keep windows and doors closed and use your air conditioner on recirculate mode. AC not only cools but also helps dehumidify, reducing mold growth in your carpets and air.
2. Use HEPA Air Purifiers and Change HVAC Filters
Portable HEPA purifiers in bedrooms and living areas capture airborne pollen and dust. Don’t forget to replace your HVAC filters regularly with high-MERV rated ones.
3. Control Humidity to Fight Dust Mites and Mold
Keep indoor humidity between 30–50% with a dehumidifier, especially in bathrooms and basements. This starves dust mites and prevents mold from thriving in your carpets.
4. The Power of Professional Carpet Cleaning for Allergy Relief
Your carpets act like giant air filters, trapping pollen, dust-mite waste, pet dander, and mold spores deep in the fibers. Regular vacuuming helps, but it only removes surface-level debris.
This is where professional hot-water extraction (steam) cleaning makes a huge difference. The combination of heat, cleaning solutions, and powerful suction removes deeply embedded allergens that ordinary vacuums can’t reach. The heat also helps kill dust mites. Many of my Dallas clients report noticeably easier breathing after we clean their carpets before or during allergy season.
5. Vacuum Weekly with a HEPA Filter Vacuum
Between professional cleanings, I recommend vacuuming at least once a week — or more often if you have a dog like I do — using a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Pay special attention to high-traffic areas where pollen and dirt get tracked in the most.
Final Thoughts
If allergies seem worse after rainy weather, your area rugs or carpets may be holding onto more pollen, moisture, and debris than you realize.
